Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge - Adjacent to a savanna-like private game park, this 1,300-key resort complex is designed to evoke the feel of an African adventure. Five levels of guest rooms overlook an African-motif suspension bridge spans the six-story atrium lobby. A 50-foot-high curved window on one end enables close-up viewing of exotic animals. Topping the lobby is an arched roof with synthetic thatch applied in tiers to form a curved shape reminiscent of a Kraal hut. Haynes Whaley Associates designed the roof so that the tiers are formed by structural members, with heat-treated cambered members cantilevering to achieve the curved effect. The roof design also incorporates an innovative hinged-slide bearing support system.
